Li’l Classix Fixes Classic Books With More Pictures, Less Words, Exactly Like Their Original Creators Intended

(New York, NY - July 9, 2014) - From award-winning cartoonist Ryan Dunlavey (Action Philosophers) and award-winning writer Grady Hendrix (Dirt Candy: A Cookbook) comes the most award-winning take on classic literature ever conceived: Li’l Classix!

“What most people don’t realize is that the Great Books would actually have been cartoons if any of their authors could draw,” says Grady Hendrix. “We have spoken to literary scholars at Harvard, Oxford and those guys who are always hanging out at the cigar shop. They all agree: from Jane Austen to Fyodor Dostoyevsky, most so-called great novelists were merely failed cartoonists.”

“I am way more talented than all of them,” Ryan Dunlavey agrees. “Let’s face it, that Shakespeare guy couldn’t draw his way out of a paper bag. Play writing was definitely his plan B.”

Rushing to the aid of these flawed hacks, Hendrix and Dunlavey have vowed to turn every single one of their great works of literature into a series of crummy newspaper style daily gag strips. Finally, the classics of Western Literature presented in the format the original authors would prefered - if only they’d had any talent.

“If it’s good enough for Heathcliff it’s good enough for Heathcliff,” Dunlavey points out.

Originally serialized as daily webcomics at lilclassix.com, the Li’l Classix series will collect these strips into handsome, digest-sized books, each adapting a different timeless tome from the literary canon. The first author they’ll rescue is Louisa May Alcott and her coming of age classic about haircuts, sisterhood, creepy boyfriends and Scarlet Fever, Little Women. Follow up titles include Romeo & Juliet (January 2015), Dracula (March 2015), Huckleberry Finn and Wuthering Heights.

Li’l Classix: Little Women (ISBN 0-9778329-7-X, 48pp black & white interior, $5.99, November 2014) collects the daily webcomic in its entirety, with additional illustrated material about the life of Alcott, her place in the literary canon, and her insatiable appetite for hash brownies (yes, really).
